The Birth Adventure

On Monday, January 11 I went to a non-baby related doctor, and as part of the normal process they took my blood pressure. It was 154/92!!! That is extremly high for me. I am usually down in the 100/55 range. So, this concerned me a lot, to say the least. For the rest of the night I continued to take my blood pressure (I had bought a cuff a few months earlier because I was worried about developing pre-eclampsia, based on prior work I had done with a patient who acquired hemispatial neglect as a result of a pre-eclampsia induced stroke), and read about the possible options on the internet. I knew I needed to call the doctor, and I knew that if I went to the doctor, that he would either put me on bed rest or send me to the hospital. So the next morning I went into work to wrap up a few things, hand over the status of my projects to others, etc. and then at 1:30 I went to the doctor. In the doctors office my BP was 160 something over 90 something - still very high, so they sent me to the hospital for more testing. My blood pressure continued to stay high, so they ordered a 12 hour urine test and a ultrasound by a specialist. They found protein in my urine (indicating pre-eclampsia) and the specialist found that the baby was measuring about 2 weeks behind in his growth, with his belly measuring 4 weeks behind. She concluded that the placenta was not functioning properly and that they needed to get him out so that they could feed and nourish him properly. This decision meant that we were going to have a baby 5 weeks early!

On the evening of Wednesday, January 13 I was transfered to labor and delivery to start the induction. I know now that the baby already knew it was time to come out, because he had already dropped, I was dilated, and contracting every 2-3 minutes. I slept through the night, and at 6:30 am I was given pitocin to start active labor. The combination of the baby being ready, already having contractions, and the pitocin, lead to a VERY fast labor. He was coming so quickly that we had to hold back and wait for the doctor to arrive (since I really wanted my doctor to deliver him).

Baby Aiden was born at 10:34 am, January 14, 2010. He was 4 lbs 6.5 oz, and 18.5 inches long.

We were allowed to hold him for a few minutes, and I was crying to hard that I could barely see him through the tears. Oh my gosh, we have a baby!

He was then taken to the NICU for testing. Here he is the first time we were able to go see him.

He stayed in the NICU for one day, and was released when they felt confident that he was able to breathe on his own, was digesting food, and could regulate his temperature. We were instructed that we had to keep him very warm and continue to monitor his temp frequently because he still was not fully able to do it himself.

Here he is when he was able to come stay with us in my recovery room. Notice the size of the pacifier and the size of his head:)
We were able to take him home from the hospital on Saturday, January 16. He looks SO tiny in the car seat...

33 week belly

Throughout my entire pregnancy I had a very small belly bump. I thought it was big, considering how much it restricted my movement and hurt my feet and my back, but in reality, it was not as big as it felt. I cannot tell you how many times people said, "wow, you are so small for being X weeks/months", or "you have the smallest X month belly I have ever seen".

Here is my belly at 33 weeks. This is the last belly shot I have (because we all know what was to follow soon after this was taken...)

Baby Showers

We had two wonderful baby showers in two days. One on Sunday, December 13, with my girlfriends, and one on Monday, December 14 at work. Unfortunately, I do not have any pictures from the shower with my girlfriends, so you will just have to take my word for it when I say it was wonderful!

Shower #1:
Ruth and Mary took me to Empire Cafe (which I love!) for brunch, and we had a wonderful time! I had their french toast with fruit on top, which was scrumptious (and healthy, I think). We spent several hours talking about baby stuff, which was tremendously helpful to me since they have both done this before, and fun too. And these girls spoiled us with gifts! I left stocked with outfits, diapers, bath supplies, a boppy, and so much more! Thank you ladies for a wonderful time and for all of your generous gifts! We really appreciate it!

Shower #2:
Some of the ladies from the office, Lena, Vicky, Aniko, and Jen R., threw a joint shower for Sherry and I (we were due two weeks apart...more on that in another post!). A lot of folks turned out, and we had a great time playing games that Lena prepared, eating, and opening presents. Here are a few snapshots.

The set up...

Opening gifts...

Thank you very much to everyone who came to celebrate with us, and for all of the wonderful, generous gifts!!!

Merry Christmas!

We had a wonderful Christmas this year. It was our first Christmas in our new home. My mom came to celebrate with us, since I am not supposed to travel (7 weeks until my due date!).

The day started with the opening of presents. Even though the baby is not here yet, he was still spoiled by Santa (a sign of things to come, maybe?).

Santa even brought Paris a present. She was so excited to see it come out of the gift bag, and then the rest of the time we were opening presents she investigated all the gift bags to see if any more were for her. It was really cute!

Michael LOVED his new golf bag!

After we opened presents, Michael cooked us a wonderful Christmas meal (I only helped a little). We had turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn, asparagus, salad, and cornbread. It was delicious!

(Our wee ones were waiting in the wings for something to fall from the table!)

I love this new bed!

Missy is very grateful for all of the new soft bedding that has been showing up in the house the last few weeks.

She just doesn't realize that she is going to have to share it all in a few weeks ...

But for now, how can you deny that face?!?

Quote

When people ask me what it's like being a parent, I tell them that every day is an epic, there are no days off, it takes everything you've got, and it's the most enjoyable thing I've ever done.

- Dr Robert Holden

Every day I feel so excited that we will soon welcome another person into our family, and scared by how much hard work lies ahead. The essence is captured so well by that quote.

29 week ultrasound

We had an ultrasound on 12/3 to check on the baby's development. He is growing just fine, although we think he is going to be on the small side (probably in the 6-7 lb range). His weight is around the 20th percentile now. The doctor says this is fine, and it is actually good for me that I will not have to deliver a large baby.

Here are some pictures. I always think these are like ink blot tests: see if you can find the baby in the shades of gray :-)

(Hint: Above is his profile, with the top of the head on the far left. Below, he is looking straight at the camera)

Only 3 more months

Today is the last day of my second trimester. It is funny that pregnancy feels like it goes on for so long, while at the same time feels like it speeds by. I can't wait to meet our son, and 3 more months feels like so long to wait. But when I look back at the last 6 months it feels like it has flown by and that there is not enough time left to get everything prepared. Part of me wants to keep him inside, where I can feel him move, keep him safe and warm, and keep him with me all of the time. It is scary to think that one day he will be in the hands of others. I have to leave him at the day care, let him go play at a friends house, drive a car by himself. But at the same time, it is going to be so joyous to have him here, and I am really looking forward to his arrival.

What our little boy is going to be like...

Before you read this, you should know that I understand that pets and children are different. However, my pets are my only dependents right now, so I am going to make a comparison anyway.

Our sweet, wonderful dog brings lots of joy to our family, but she can also be a bully sometimes. Like any bully, if you let her get away with it, she will keep on you, but if you stand up to her, she will retreat. Well, between my two cats, I have one (Missy) that has decided that she wants nothing to do with the dog (hates her, really) and another (Wuga) that sees the dog as another member of the family. Thus, when my bullying dog tries to get her way with Missy, Missy runs away, teaching Paris that she can continue her behavior. Wuga on the other hand, doesn't put up with the dog's crap at all. When Paris tries to get her way, by stealing water when Wuga is drinking, or stealing his napping place by pushing him out of the way, Wuga gives her a firm holler and doesn't budge. It is really impressive for me to watch. My little 20 lb cat setting the 50 lb dog in her place.

Now that I have set the stage, let me explain what the has to do with our baby.

As I watch my little Wuga stand up to our bully dog, I feel so proud. I don't think that there is anything that I have done to train Wuga that this is the best approach, besides loving him and always treating him as an equal member of this family. We say "Excuse me" when one is in the way, say "Sorry" if we bump him, etc. So I think he has learned that he is valuable and important, but we have done the same thing for Missy and she still runs. Thus, there is something inherent in Wuga that makes me proud of him. I hope that I can show our baby that he is important and valuable, and that he possesses whatever it is that will make him feel like he can stand up to bullies, even when they are more than twice his size.

24 weeks

Well, it has taken me 24 weeks to take a picture of my growing belly. I have meant to do it all along and it just never seemed to happen. Oh well, better late than never, right? Here he is at 24 weeks (I sure wish I had x-ray vision!)

Hide and Go Seek

Last night it was raining so Paris could not go outside. Stuck inside we had to figure out some way to help her burn off her energy, so we decided to play one of her favorite games - Hide and go seek. I know it sounds strange, but yes, our dog plays hide and seek with us! I hold her and count to ten, while Daddy goes and hides somewhere, and then she runs around searching until she finds him. Since she seems to only know how to play when Daddy hides, he never gets to see how cute she is when she runs around trying to find him, so last night I video taped her. I love this video and wanted to share it for several reasons.

1. Playing this game makes Paris so happy, and you can see it all over her face. Pure Joy!
2. I am just amazed by how smart she is every time we play. She looks in all of Daddy's hiding places until she finds him. It makes my heart swell how smart she is.
Enjoy!
(Please disregard the messy house:-)

Nursery Theme

We have chosen to go with a jungle/safari animal theme for the nursery. The walls in the nursery are light green, and I love animals, so I thought this would be a perfect fit. I bought the main bedding set already, and then registered for all of the coordinating accessories at Babies-R-Us. I have also found a few cute things at JC Penny, but their registry is not currently working. Hopefully, I will be able to create one there in the next few days. I am not going to register for clothes, because I think people are going to just get what they think is cute anyway, but I will register for the big items and the theme items. We have already purchased the crib and the changing table too. That is supposed to arrive by 10/15. I am VERY excited to receive the crib, so that I can really start to set things up and begin to make the room look like a nursery. There are only 4 months left until the little guy arrives, and that seems like such a short time to get everything ready (especially with the holidays between now and then).

Here is a picture of the nursery theme:

Baby's First Quilt

Grandma Lisa recently sent a handmade quilt for the baby. Here is baby's first quilt -
Thank you so much Grandma Lisa!!!

He's Kicking!

I felt our little guy kick for the first time on Monday (9/21) afternoon. I think. It was either 3 kicks, or some hiccups. I vote for kicks though. Since then it has been getting stronger and more frequent. Sometimes I can feel him in the morning if I lay on my back and put my hand over my stomach. This morning I was doing just that and I felt him moving a lot! So much so that I reached for Michael's hand, put it on my stomach, and he was able to feel him too! It is very weird to have someone moving around inside you, but very awesome at the same time. I am very happy to know that he is moving around and that he is growing large enough so that I can feel him, because that means he is developing as he should, which is a great relief. All of the ultrasounds have said he is doing just fine, but it is nice to get the confirmation more often than just at doctors visits.

It's a boy!

We went for our 18 week anatomy scan today which revealed that the baby is a 7 oz. little boy! We were predicting that he was a boy, but it is nice to see the confirmation. Here is a picture. The Dr. said that she can see his "boyness". I cannot. See what you think.....
Here is another picture of him just for fun. I think he looks really cute in this picture (am I biased?). It is a nice shot of him. Him, oh boy, it's a him!

12 week ultrasound

It was really nice to see our little one moving around in there. He/she looks healthy and has a good heart beat (150 bpm). This picture shows his/her face from the side with a hand next to the eye region.

A Valentine's Baby

Here is our first look at our new little one. It is really hard to differentiate anything in this picture, but it did give us our due date of February 14, 2010.

We're Pregnant!

We had been planning and trying...and finally...

And then just to be sure...

On 6/20/09 our lives changed forever.

Welcome to our blog!

We are 18 weeks pregnant today and I thought that our new life, with all of its changes, should be documented. Since all of our family lives in other states, a blog seemed like a good choice.

I am notoriously bad at keeping in touch with people, so hopefully this blog will serve as a communication method between us and our loved ones. I will do my best to post on a regular basis, but if I don't, feel free to holler at me :-) Happy Reading!
